🏆 Quick Answer — What Are The Best Things To Do In Puerto Plata?

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic offers some of the Caribbean's most thrilling adventures. The crown attraction is the 27 Charcos de Damajagua — 27 natural waterfall cascades where you hike, jump, slide, and swim through turquoise jungle pools. Above the city, Mount Isabel de Torres is home to the only aerial cable car (teleférico) in the entire Caribbean, climbing 2,600 feet to a Christ statue and botanical garden with panoramic Atlantic views. Beyond that: ATV and buggy tours rip through mountain trails, zip lines launch over jungle canopy, horseback rides trace the shoreline at sunset, Dudu Lagoon hides underground caves with crystal-blue pools, and Cayo Arena — a tiny coral sandbar island — floats just offshore for the best snorkeling on the North Coast.

Taste The Dominican
North Coast

Between adventures, Puerto Plata's food scene serves up the real Dominican Republic — fresh-caught Atlantic fish, cacao from local mountain farms, and staples that locals have cooked for centuries.

🍌

Mangú

The Dominican breakfast of champions. Creamy mashed green plantains topped with pickled red onions, fried cheese, salami, and eggs. Order it at any local comedor.

🐟

Fresh Grilled Fish

The Atlantic delivers fresh mahi-mahi, snapper, and grouper daily to Puerto Plata's waterfront restaurants. Order whole fish, grilled with tostones and a cold Presidente.

🥘

Sancocho

The Dominican national stew — slow-cooked broth with multiple meats, root vegetables, and plantain. Served at celebrations and Sundays, absolutely worth seeking out at a local kitchen.

🍫

Artisan Cacao & Chocolate

The Puerto Plata mountains grow some of the world's finest cacao. Several operators offer bean-to-bar chocolate-making tours of women-run cooperatives that have produced chocolate for generations.

🥤

Morir Soñando

Literally "to die dreaming" — this iconic Dominican drink blends fresh orange juice with cold milk and sugar. Found at street carts throughout the city, and as refreshing as it sounds.

🎭

Merengue & Bachata Culture

Puerto Plata's Malecón comes alive at night with merengue, and Cabarete hosts the North Coast's best Latin dance nights. Bachata was born in the DR — hearing it live by the ocean is unforgettable.

Puerto Plata
Travel Tips

A few things experienced travelers wish they'd known before arriving on the North Coast.

01

Go to 27 Waterfalls Early

The 27 Waterfalls get busy mid-morning when cruise ships are in port. Arrive at opening time for smaller groups, better photos, and cooler temperatures for the hike.

02

Don't Drink Tap Water

Tap water is not safe for drinking or brushing teeth. Bottled water is cheap and available everywhere. Hotels and restaurants use safe water — confirm when dining locally.

03

USD Works Almost Everywhere

US Dollars are accepted at most tourist businesses. Dominican Pesos (DOP) get better rates at local spots. ATMs are widely available, including at the airport and downtown.

04

Take a Motoconcho for Short Trips

Motorcycle taxis (motoconchos) are cheap and ubiquitous for short city trips — agree on the price first. For Cabarete or Sosúa, private taxis or shared guagua buses are better.

05

November–April Is Peak Season

November–April brings the most reliable weather and most visitors. June–August is peak kite season in Cabarete. September–October sees the most rainfall.

06

Learn a Few Spanish Words

English is common at tourist spots, but a few Spanish phrases — "buenos días," "gracias," "cuánto cuesta?" — open more doors and build more goodwill than any translation app.
